What A Mentoplasty Is And How You Can Fix An Annoying Chin

You may know some people who are dissatisfied with the shape of their nose or the size of their breasts. Likewise, you may know someone who has had liposuction or a tummy tuck. But do you know anyone uncomfortable with their chin size or shape?

Well, although this dissatisfaction is a little less frequent than the others, many patients would like to reshape the so-called chin, the lower part of the face, below the lower lip – and which you can also call the chin.

Along with the nose, the chin is one of the main structures that give the shape of the face, playing a very important aesthetic role in our face. The most desirable is that the chin is positioned in line with the glabella (space between the eyebrows).

Patients’ dissatisfaction can be with a retracted positioning, in which the chin appears smaller than it should be, or a more projected positioning, which makes the chin appear larger. Both cases can be alleviated by mentoplasty.

Defining A New Chin

Mentoplasty, chin surgery silicone long legs (เสริม คาง ขา ยาว which is the term in Thai) must be planned considering the patient’s entire face to obtain a harmonious proportion between chin, nose, eyes, mouth, etc. For this, the surgeon will analyze the mandible and the patient’s profile, verifying the absolute need for a correction in the shape of the chin.

In the case of a small or very retracted chin, a chin augmentation may be performed. When the chin is too large or protruded, the surgery is called chin surgery.

Depending on the patient’s case, the surgeon may recommend a mentoplasty (chin plastic surgery) associated with a rhinoplasty to obtain more harmonious proportions. This happens because the size of the chin influences the perception we have of the nose.

Augmentation Mentoplasty

When the patient has a bone development that is less than ideal for his profile, the surgery can be done by placing a prosthesis or repositioning the bone (advancement mentoplasty). In both cases, the surgery takes about an hour. The procedure is also performed at the clinic, which takes around 15 minutes. It can be done with absorbable and non-absorbable products or through fat grafting.

Depending on the surgeon, the procedure may begin with liposuction on the chin to better define the jaw’s contour and make its angles more visible.

In prosthesis placement surgery, usually silicone, the implant is inserted between the chin bone and the film over it. The incision can be made inside the mouth or on the underside of the chin, depending on the plastic surgeon’s assessment. In addition to the silicone prosthesis, the volume of the chin can also be increased through fat grafting. Anesthesia is usually local with sedation.

In the advancement genioplasty technique, the surgeon needs to saw off the bone to reposition it in a more prominent position. The bone will be fixed with titanium screws and a reduced size plate. Anesthesia is usually general. Although it is a more invasive surgery than the prosthesis placement, this technique allows a more significant increase. It allows the repositioning of the muscles below the chin to soften the sagging and correct the double chin appearance.
